STANFORD, Calif.--Hong Kong-born pop star Agnes Chan brought her baby son to the workplace 25 years ago, igniting a national debate in Japan about work and child rearing, dubbed the “Agnes controversy.”
Chan, 58, who had long refrained from discussing the work-life controversy, has started to speak out about the issue. Asked why she decided to revisit it now, Chan said she was prompted by past regrets.
“It could have been different if I had fought it out at the time,” she said in a recent interview.
The environment surrounding Japan’s working mothers remains difficult. In the United States, Yahoo Inc. CEO Marissa Mayer has recently triggered an uproar over work and child care after she brought her baby to the workplace.
Chan was a speaker at the annual conference of the International Association of Feminist Economics held at Stanford University in mid-July.
“Many young Japanese women still think that having children will put an end to their careers,” she said. “Women should be free to choose what they do with their lives and be able to realize their full potential.”
The audience erupted into applause.
Chan decided to revisit her concerns about work and family after Mayer gave birth in autumn 2012 and built a nursery next to her office at her own expense so she could keep her baby close to her. The 38-year-old Yahoo CEO had, on the other hand, banned employees from working at home as part of her company's business reconstruction efforts.
Mayer’s moves incited jealousy and generated a backlash from many working mothers across the country.
The two debates across the Pacific cannot be easily compared, as Mayer’s case involves wage discrepancies and management decisions in an organization.
But Myra Strober, a professor emeritus of education at Stanford University and adviser to Chan when she was a doctoral student there, said she felt the controversy would not have been as heated if the protagonists had been men.
She invited Chan to be a speaker at the feminist economics conference.
In 1987, when Chan was a celebrity with nearly 10 TV gigs at the time, she gave birth to a baby boy, but returned to work three months later.
Determined to raise him by herself as much as possible, Chan brought him to a TV station where she worked and breast-fed him in a backstage room during her spare time. Critics blasted her for “devaluing” her work or being “dependent on her husband.”
Recalling what she felt those days, Chan said, “Many companies did not allow women to do something similar as I did. If you say something, you’ll be criticized.”
Upon request, she testified at a 1988 Diet hearing on women, work and child rearing. “I fled from the debate over the issue,” she said.
Chan touched upon the controversy at the international gathering at Stanford: “Mothers accused me of abusing my child. Working women screamed ‘Unfair.’ ”
It was the first time she had talked about the problem in public since the debate had died down.
According to the Families and Work Institute, a nonprofit organization in the United States, only 7 percent of U.S. corporations and organizations had child-rearing facilities within the office or close by in 2012, the same rate as in 2005.
In Japan, where the maternity and child-rearing leave system has been set, “maternity harassment” cases are on the rise, aimed at stopping women from continuing to work while raising their children.
According to the labor ministry, 43.9 percent of women who gave birth to their first child between 2005 and 2009 left their job, an increase by 6.5 percentage points from 20 years ago.
“It is not too late,” Chan said. “I want to tell my experience to younger generations to improve the situation for working women.”
She is planning to form a network for men and women to discuss work and family. She also plans to convey her message through TV programs and via the Internet.
Among the audience members at Stanford was Kazuhei Kaneko, 26, her oldest son, the baby that triggered the uproar in 1987.
“Did I feel lonely in my childhood? No, I didn’t,” said Kaneko, who finances venture business startups in Silicon Valley.
“What if I marry a woman like my mother? Well, I don’t mind becoming a 'house husband.' ”

Education amenities key in a township
Benjamin Franklin once said that an investment in knowledge pays the best interest. Sunway Group founder Tan Sri Jeffrey Cheah AO is a strong advocate of “education provides the optimum route out of poverty”.
Sunway Iskandar has included a government chinese school in its 1,800-acre township development.
Dubbed SJKC Cheah Fah, the school will be built on 5.1 acres of land. It comprises two academic blocks (Block A and B), one administration block, one canteen block, one block of multi-purpose hall and a proposed swimming pool. The school has a total of 24 classrooms with learning amenities and facilities such as science lab, computer lab, arts room, life skills workshop, football field and indoor badminton and basketball courts.
This schoolis slated for completion in January 2022 features a fully covered, high roof, open space concourse located at the heart of the school and is connected to all blocks via covered corridors. While the proposed swimming pool also will make it one of the very few government schools in Malaysia to be equipped with a swimming pool,” said Soosay.
“Hence, the first development the group undertook in our township was Sunway International School (SIS) which offers Canadian (Ontario) School Curriculum from kindergarten to Grade 10 as well as the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).
The international school which started back in 2017 had only 180 students then. Today, they have some 500 students, with an expansion plan to increase classroom capacity by 2021,” he shared.
The township offers not only education elements to its homebuyers, but also entertainment, recreation and leisure amenities for the community such as the Sunway Emerald Lake, Sunway International School, X Park Sunway Iskandar, Sunway Big Box Retail Park and Sunway Big Box Hotel.
“The township has easy accessibility via major highways and is well-connected. It is only 5km away from Singapore via Coastal Highway Southern Link (CHSL) which was completed in 2017. We have also partnered with Causeway Link to provide bus services from Johor to Singapore, SoCar, free Iskandar Puteri shuttle bus services, etc,” Soosay highlighted.
“All our specialised and armed auxiliary police personnel will be conducting 24-hour patrols around the development’s vicinity to ensure the safety and security of residents,” said Soosay.
Meanwhile, he also emphasised the art of building a township entails a balancing mastery between development and nature, where human needs are satisfied at minimal expense of the environment.
“Our 1,800-acre development site lies on the riverine of the Pendas River and overlooks the Straits of Johor. With more than RM30 billion in gross development value, Sunway Iskandar is one of the first townships to be awarded the GBI Silver Rating in Johor.
Sunway Iskandar has got expansive plans ahead of them. Come next year, be prepared for the completion of its Sunway GRID Residence and opening of its first Sunway Big Box Hotel and Starbucks Drive-thru.
“For those who are looking to live in Sunway Iskandar, look out for our latest residential DUO living landed homes dubbed the Sunway Maple Residence set to launch next year. We will also be focusing on eco-tourism initiatives such as solar and farm, XPARK Sunway Iskandar expansion for motorsport and a Global Learning village,” Soosay said.
A wholesome community:Sunway Iskandar
The township offers not only education elements to its homebuyers, but also entertainment, recreation and leisure amenities for the community such as the Sunway Emerald Lake, Sunway International School, X Park Sunway Iskandar, Sunway Big Box Retail Park and Sunway Big Box Hotel.
“The township has easy accessibility via major highways and is well-connected. It is only 5km away from Singapore via Coastal Highway Southern Link (CHSL) which was completed in 2017. Safety and security are the developer’s most important priority, hence security personnel and auxiliary police are placed around the township to create a protected environment for the community.
“All our specialised and armed auxiliary police personnel will be conducting 24-hour patrols around the development’s vicinity to ensure the safety and security of residents,” said Soosay.
Meanwhile, he also emphasised the importance of the sustainability element in Sunway Iskandar, as the developer believes that the art of building a township entails a balancing mastery between development and nature, where human needs are satisfied at minimal expense of the environment.
“Our 1,800-acre development site lies on the riverine of the Pendas River and overlooks the Straits of Johor. With more than RM30 billion in gross development value, Sunway Iskandar is one of the first townships to be awarded the GBI Silver Rating in Johor.
“Sunway Iskandar is expected to have a population of 140,000 once the development is completed. Thus, we encourage our communities to live every dream, learn without limits, have work-life balance, and play beyond imagination in a safe, healthy and connected environment. Since the township’s inception in 2014, we have been organising many annual community events such as World Environment Day, Sunway Iskandar Viper Challenge, Sunway Iskandar Night Marathon, Movie Night, and Unicorn Fun Run and recently the Sunway Iskandar Virtual Plank Challenge,” Soosay added.
The Sunway International School (SIS) which offers Canadian (Ontario) School Curriculum to kindergartners all the way to Grade 10 as well as the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) is currently housing 500 students, with an expansion plan to increase classroom capacity by 2021.
Bigger and better

Remembering school days in Bentham
Bentham Grammar School began life as a small village school as a result of money provided by the wills of Thomas Collingwood and Thomas Baynes.
By Michelle Blade
Friday, 7th February 2020, 11:50 am
The original school was situated in High Bentham at the junction of the Clapham and Burton roads.
It educated the boys of the local area and took a small number of girls from time to time during the 19th century, though it was not until the 1930s that girls were a permanent feature.
The 1870 Education Act introduced state elementary education for all and the original Bentham Grammar School building was purchased by the West Riding Authority as an elementary school, with the grammar school acquiring new premises at Moon’s Acre, between High and Low Bentham, in 1878.
Although numbers fluctuated, the school roll was usually 40-50 pupils and a traditional range of subjects was taught with ambitious students being prepared for entering university.
From the 1870s, a small number of boarder pupils were accommodated in the school.
In 1946, the then headmaster resigned to open his own school, taking with him many of the pupils.
The situation was not an enviable one for a new headmaster in those years of post-war austerity but John Webb and his wife Margaret were exactly the right leaders to take over the ailing school.
In 1948 the school moved again. The beautiful rectory building in Low Bentham, designed in the mid-19th century by the renowned architect Norman Shaw and situated on the banks of the River Wenning, was being sold and the governors of the grammar school were persuaded to buy it.
Over the next 21 years, the Webbs created a very successful school, raising the numbers from 70 in 1946 to 400 by the late 1960s.
During this period there was a constant demand for building work as the rectory was altered to meet the needs of a growing school.
Money was invariably tight and thus developed the spirit of self-help enterprise that came to define the school.
Remembering school days in Bentham [11]
Bentham Grammar School began life as a small village school as a result of money provided by the wills of Thomas Collingwood and Thomas Baynes.
During the early years the rectory’s cottage garden offered children the opportunity to rent a small plot and grow vegetables and fruit or keep hens, selling the produce back to the school kitchens.
The appointment of Joshua Lonsdale in 1947 provided both knowledge and experience of building and he successfully established a tradition of pupils assisting in most of the works undertaken, with pupils being expected to give up 30 minutes a week to work on school projects.
Between 1950 and 1951, pupils assisted in laying the foundations of an assembly hall and in the construction of a dining room and workshop.
Pupils provided most of the labour required for levelling the playing fields for allow hockey and cricket.
The largest project was the creation of three wooden classrooms between 1955-56, designed by Lonsdale, with pupils doing most of the construction using timber reclaimed from a dismantled railway bridge.
BBC news did a feature on the self-help tradition at the school in May 1956.
In 1961 a block of science laboratories was built along with a senior library in 1964, with most of the final fittings and decoration being the work of pupils.
The headmistress, Mrs Webb, had worked tirelessly to provide a swimming pool on site and in 1967 this was finally opened, pupils having done much of the early work in digging out foundations and in back-filling around the walls.
Although the last major contribution by pupils was the installation of fittings in the new chemistry lab and domestic science room in 1971, individuals continued to offer their time in the public interest.
Pupils created a brick built store room for outdoor pursuits equipment and in 1995, sixth-former Andrew Gardner built a bridge across Eskew beck at the rear of the school, allowing local people to use of a popular footpath that had been impassable and showing the traditions established by the Webbs and Lonsdale had not withered despite the passing of their creators.
Although the school relied heavily on self-help, especially in the early years, it did not neglect service to the wider community.
In the 1960s and early 70s, senior pupils acted as road crossing wardens for local primary school children at the beginning and end of the school day. Others made regular visits to befriend the elderly or to assist in nursery schools.
A number of boys had a regular commitment to work on restoration projects for footpaths in the Yorkshire Dales. All schools produce successful students that excel in various aspects of school life and Bentham Grammar School was no exception with some outstanding results in public examinations.
Remembering school days in Bentham [111]
Bentham also developed fine traditions in music, drama, sport and outdoor pursuits, with many students going on to achieve professional success in their chosen activities.
There can be few schools however that can boast of such a tradition of self-help enterprise as that which developed at Bentham Grammar School after the move to the old rectory. Many old scholars can quite truthfully say “I helped to build that school”.
When the governors announced Bentham Grammar School was to close in July 2002, there was considerable shock locally.
Although there were many theories advanced as to the reasons, the full story was not known at the time.
A new local history “Bentham Grammar School- The Final Years” has now been produced.
Written by William Stockdale, this history covers the period from 1976 up to closure and tells the story from where an earlier history of Bentham Grammar School left off, providing answers to the many questions asked at the time of closure
The book has 168 pages with just under 100 photographs and costs £12.
