His brother Harry arrived seated beside his formidable looking close protection officer but, ever charming, was all smiles as he was driven past waiting photographers.

The Queen's annual pre-Christmas lunch is a royal tradition and allows her to catch up with more distant relations, who are not invited to join her at the Sandringham Estate in Norfolk on the 25th.

All of the senior royals, among them Prince Charles and Camilla, William and Kate, and the Earl and Countess of Wessex are expected at the country estate on Christmas Day and appear alongside the monarch at the traditional Christmas morning church service.

One member of the Royal Family who appeared to be particularly looking forward to his lunch was Prince George, who was driven into the Palace beside his nanny, Maria Theresa Borrallo in the back of his parents' car.

George, who was adorably smiley as he peered out of the window, is due to celebrate his second Christmas at Sandringham next week - and his last as an only child.

The 16-month-old royal and his parents are also due to relocate to Anmer Hall on the Sandringham Estate where an extended nursery big enough for two babies has been prepared.

George's new sibling is due in April and will live with his or her parents and older brother at the Norfolk property. The little prince will also have to share his nanny, who is expected to help care for the new arrival.

Carole and Michael Middleton, who have spent a considerable amount of time with Prince George over the last year, are also expected to take a hand in raising the new arrival and will join the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge at Anmer Hall on Boxing Day.

Equally cheerful was Canadian Autumn Kelly, the blonde wife of Princess Anne's son Peter Phillips, who offered waiting members of the public a wave as she flashed past. 

Princess Anne and the Earl of Wessex were also at the luncheon, as was Anne's husband Vice Admiral Sir Timothy Laurence who, unusually, arrived for the event on foot.

Others invited to join the party included Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, their daughter Lady Gabriella Windsor, Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester and a fresh-faced Princess Beatrice who smiled happily as she was driven in.

After the joyful christening of Zara Phillips’s daughter Mia late last month, the Queen’s granddaughter has received some sad news: her aunt Sarah Staples has died at the age of 63.

‘She died suddenly,’ says a friend of the family. ‘It is very sad.’

Sarah was the only sister of Zara’s father, Captain Mark Phillips, who divorced Princess Anne in 1992 when Zara was ten and her brother Peter was 14.

A Chinese television presenter who refused chemotherapy treatment after discovering she had cancer when she was pregnant has died.

Qiu Yuanyuan, 26, of Zhengzhou, Henan, who had declined treatment while pregnant to avoid it harming her unborn baby, died exactly 100 days after giving birth to her son, Niannian.

The former chess game show host learned she was pregnant in March - but the results of a physical exam found she had a late-stage malignant tumour, according to reports in China.

She decided to stop her treatment to protect her baby, but the cancer then spread around her body – and she was admitted to hospital in September when her conditioned worsened.

There, she gave birth by Caesarean section in September to Niannian, who had only been in her womb for seven months and weighed about 3lbs upon his arrival.

The mother then had an operation to remove the tumour and 20 days of chemotherapy - but it was too late to save her and she died last week.

Her husband Zhang Qixuan told the Zhengzhou Evening News: ‘After getting married, becoming a mother was her biggest wish. She chose to save our child. She understood that not everything in life can be perfect. And she said she had never regretted her decision.’

A flamboyant nightclub owner has been found stabbed to death at his Mayfair home, allegedly by his own son.

David West, 70, who purchased the title of 'Lord of the Manor of Hollesley' on eBay, suffered fatal injuries at his home in Ormond Yard in London's West End.

His 44-year-old son, also called David West, was charged with his murder on Saturday night and will appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Monday. 

Police and paramedics were called to his three-bed home in upmarket Ormond Yard, which is just off Jermyn Street at around 6pm on Friday night. 

His son was arrested nearby on suspicion of murder and taken into custody at a Central London police station where he was later charged. 

Police officers were last night waiting for formal identification of the dead man and have opened a murder investigation.

A post-mortem revealed that a single stab wound was the cause of death. 

The pensioner, originally from Romford, Essex, started his career as a market trader in the East End of London before building a family tobacco business in Belgium. 

In the 1980s, Mr West senior founded a wholesale business on a double-decker bus in Calais, selling cheap alcohol and cigarettes and later found permanent premises setting up 'EastEnders'.

The business is now part of the largest British owned cash and carry group in Europe and has its own house wine label called 'The Dogs B*******'.

He owned Mayfair night club HeyJo and the Abracadabra restaurant, both located on Jermyn Street, and was renowned for his brightly coloured suits.

It is believed that the pensioner also owned a talent management firm and gentleman's club Mandy's - which claims to be the oldest in London. 

He was also the owner of 4 Star Hostel, a guesthouse for women near Piccadilly Circus. 

In 2007, he hired Cherie Blair, who is a barrister, to challenge the smoking ban in public places - a flagship policy of then Prime Minister Tony Blair's government. 

Mr West senior claimed the ban was a breach of the human rights of his guests and staff. 

The area around Jermyn Street has been one of the most fashionable parts of London since the 18th Century. 

Because of the affluence of the area, HeyJo and Abracadabra were often frequented by Russian businessmen, with the restaurant offering a Russian menu.

Traces of polonium-210 were found in Hey Jo in 2007, months after two former KGB agents wanted for the unrelated murder of Russian spy Alexander Litvinenko visited the nightclub. 

The Jermyn Street area is now known for its tailors and fashion shops, which include Thomas Pink and Hackett.

Properties are worth an average of £2.5million.
