Introducing the future prince and princess of Monaco

The Palace of Monaco has released a set of images of Prince Albert II of Monaco and his wife Charlene posing with their twin babies Jacques and Gabriella at the Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco.

The Christmas-themed photographs show a smitten pair of parents gazing at their newborn children, with Princess Gabriella in pink and Prince Jaques in baby blue.

Gabriella was born first at 5.04pm, and Jacques at 5.06pm, but it is Jacques who will be the future Prince of Monaco, because of the Mediterranean principality's male inheritance laws.

The Palace of Monaco have released a set of images of Prince Albert II of Monaco and his wife Charlene posing with their twin babies Jacques and Gabriella at the Princess Grace Hospital in Monaco

They are the first children for the 36-year-old former South African Olympic swimmer, who married Prince Albert II, 56, three years ago.

Prince Albert was by his wife's side as the children were delivered on December 10 at the Princess Grace Hospital, which is named after Albert's mother, the late Hollywood star, Grace Kelly.

In the UK, only one set of royal twins has ever been born - to King James I of Scotland and his wife Joan Beaufort in 1430.

It is thought that the twins were welcomed via caesarean section, but the doctor delivering them had no more than a symbolic hand in deciding the destiny of the Grimaldi dynasty.

In principle, there's no medical reason a doctor would have an active role in deciding which newborn is delivered first, even in the case of a caesarean section, an expert said.

'The obstetrician will always deliver first the twin that presents itself first when the uterus is opened at the time of caesarean section,' said Dr. Patrick O'Brien,

spokesman for Britain's Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. 'We don't decide in advance which twin to deliver first.'

Had they both been of the same sex, the first one out would have taken the throne but because the Monégasque twins are a boy and a girl, the boy will automatically inherit.

Richard Gere bows in front of The Dalai Lama after a teaching at a monastery in India

At a time of holiday hustle and bustle, Richard Gere has sought refuge inward.
The 65-year-old actor paid a trip to Gaden Jangtse Thoesam Norling Monastery in South India, where he reunited with his friend The Dalai Lama for a Lamrim teaching on Wednesday.

Richard peacefully pressed his palms together while the spiritual leader offered his own hand towards the actor.

Richard suited up in a charcoal blazer and black trousers, and finished off his sharp attire with a sky blue shirt.

The actor sported a smart pair of rimless glasses, and looped meditation beads around his wrists.

Richard's interest in Buddhism began in 1978 when he traveled to Nepal with Brazilian painter Sylvia Martins.

The actor is a fierce supporter of the Dalai Lama, and recalled to Frontline how meeting the leader proved to strengthen his belief in the practice.

'I saw the Dalai Lama but he's also this extraordinary man, extraordinary professor, extraordinary father, extraordinary friend - all of that,' The Pretty Woman actor told the program.

'It really shows you there's a way of making this work, of using his system, a religious psychological philosophical system that can really transform everything. The dream really becomes kind of wonderful because it's possible to actualize it.'

A message of reconciliation: Queen to say she's been 'deeply touched' by 'selflessness' of those fighting Ebola - and pay tribute to the Tower of London ceramic poppies in Christmas speech

The Queen will say she has been 'deeply touched' by the 'selflessness' of medical staff fighting Ebola in her traditional Christmas message, and will pay tribute to the Tower of London poppies.

The UK is one of a number of nations that has seen its doctors and nurses volunteer to help countries such as Sierra Leone in West Africa combat the epidemic.

Today, in her annual address to the nation, the Queen will praise medics fighting the epidemic, as well as those working to provide humanitarian relief in warzones.

The theme of this year's speech, which comes after a busy year for the Royal Family, is reconciliation.

d the head of state will tell viewers: 'I have been deeply touched this year by the selflessness of aid workers and medical volunteers who have gone abroad to help victims of conflict or of diseases like Ebola, often at great personal risk.'

The Queen will also discuss the ceramic poppy display at the Tower of London, just one of the major events staged this year to commemorate those who died in the First World War, which began 100 years ago.

Poignant: The Queen will also discuss the ceramic poppy display at the Tower of London, describing how she felt while walking through the installation. 'For every poppy, a life; and a reminder of the grief of loved ones left behind,' she says

Some 888,246 poppies were planted in the moat at the Tower, one for each British and Colonial death during the conflict.

The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh visited Blood Swept Lands And Seas Of Red in October, and walked through the art installation created by ceramic artist Paul Cummins.

'The ceramic poppies at the Tower of London drew millions, and the only possible reaction to walking among them was silence,' she says, in the speech to be broadcast at 3pm today.

Dressed in a purple dress by Angela Kelly with a diamond and pearl brooch inherited from her grandmother, Queen Mary, the Queen recorded her Christmas message seated next to a table featuring separate photographs of her grandparents George V and Queen Mary and an embossed brass box.

The box was a Christmas Day gift for those serving overseas in the First World War during 1914, and was organised by the Sailors & Soldiers Christmas Fund created by Princess Mary, George’s daughter. It was filled with a variety of gifts, from tobacco for smokers to chocolate for nurses.

The Christmas address is written by the Queen herself and usually has a strong religious framework, as she reflects current issues and draws on her own experiences over the past year.

Her speech is one of the rare occasions when she does not turn to the Government for advice but is able to voice her own views.

The Queen’s traditional message was produced this year by the BBC and recorded in Buckingham Palace’s state dining room, using 4K ultra-high-definition digital TV cameras.
As well as being transmitted on both television and radio, the speech will also be shown on the Royal Channel on YouTube, and in Commonwealth countries.
Channel 4's alternative speech will also focus on the Ebola outbreak, with British survivor William Pooley delivering a message from the Connaught Hospital in Freetown, Sierra Leone.
The 29-year-old nurse, who famously returned to work in Sierra Leone after recovering in London from the deadly virus, will follow in the footsteps of US whistleblower Edward Snowden and celebrities Sharon Osbourne and Ali G by delivering the broadcaster's Alternative Christmas Message.

THE QUEEN’S SPEECH: A FESTIVE TRADITION

Landmark: The Queen's Christmas message was first broadcast on television in 1957 (pictured)

The Queen’s Christmas broadcast is a traditional feature of the festive season where the head of state can express her thoughts about the past year.

The Queen made her first Christmas broadcast in 1952 and the annual message was first shown on TV in 1957.

In that first broadcast she delivered her message live on the radio from her study at Sandringham in Norfolk.

She has delivered one every year except in 1969, when she decided the royals had been on TV enough after an unprecedented family documentary. Instead, her greeting took the form of a written address.

In her 1991 message, the Queen silenced rumours of abdication as she pledged to continue to serve.

She issued a writ against the Sun newspaper after it published the full text of her 1992 broadcast two days before transmission. She later accepted an apology and a £200,000 donation to charity.

The Queen’s grandfather, King George V, delivered the first royal Christmas broadcast live on the radio from Sandringham in 1932.

George V was at first unsure about using the relatively untried medium of the wireless, but eventually agreed.

There was no Christmas broadcast in 1936 or 1938, and it was the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939 that firmly established the tradition.

The speech is written by the Queen herself and each has a strong religious framework, reflects current issues and often draws on her own experiences.

Elderly couple seriously injured after 'vicious attack' by suspected burglar in their house on quiet cul-de-sac

An elderly couple have been left seriously injured after a vicious attack by a suspected burglar in their quiet, cul-de-sac home.

Eric and Joyce Davey remain in hospital with throat and head injuries respectively after being attacked in their home in Scunthorpe, north Lincolnshire, yesterday afternoon.

The couple, aged 90 and 86, were discovered after neighbours saw a man fleeing their property in a white van.

A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary.

'This was a vicious attack on two elderly and vulnerable members of the community in their own home,' said Detective Inspector Jon Cross.

While it is believed the couple were assaulted by the man attempting to burgle them, it is not known whether or not the man stole anything from the property.

Mr Sloan added the couple do not interact with neighbours much, but had lots of security installed at their house.

'I thought it was a car alarm further down the street but, as it progressed, we understand that it was the alarm on his house.

'We saw them come out. It didn’t look very good.

'It’s unbelievable. You wouldn’t think something like this would happen on this street. Definitely not.

'I know everybody on this street. It’s quite a shock really to find out that something like this has happened.'

'They kept themselves to themselves, basically. We keep ourselves to ourselves. But we still look out for people.

'He’s got CCTV all over the place and I don’t really know what’s happened.
'It’s a very, very quiet street. It’s a very quiet area. It’s a good area. It’s quite shocking to hear what’s gone on.'

Another neighbour, Suzanne Cowling, said: 'Nobody deserves that in their own home. It’s not right.'

China indicts Jackie Chan's son Jaycee on drug charge

Chinese prosecutors on Monday indicted the son of Hong Kong action film star Jackie Chan on the charge of sheltering others to use drugs, more than four months after he was detained.

If convicted, singer-actor Jaycee Chan could be jailed for up to three years.

Chan, 32, was among a string of celebrities detained over the summer for vices such as drug use and hiring prostitutes, as Beijing vowed to clean up social morals.

Chan's case has been particularly embarrassing for his more famous father, who was named by Beijing as an anti-drug ambassador in 2009.

Beijing police detained the younger Chan at his Beijing apartment in August along with Taiwanese movie star Ko Kai.

Police said Chan and Ko both tested positive for marijuana and admitted using the drug, and that 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of it were taken from Chan's home.

Ko, whose real name is Ko Chen-tung, was released after a 14-day administrative detention for the drug use, but Chan — who has remained in detention since August — is faced with the more serious criminal charge.

State broadcaster CCTV in August aired video of the police raid on Chan's apartment, in which Chan was shown identifying marijuana. Ko testified on camera that he had used drugs at Chan's home.

Chan has never publicly contested the charge, and his father has openly apologized over his detention.

'Regarding this issue with my son Jaycee, I feel very angry and very shocked,' Jackie Chan, 60, wrote on his microblog in August. 'As a public figure, I'm very ashamed. As a father, I'm heartbroken.'

Heartbroken over his son: The Rush Hour star, 60, at a press conference in Beijing, China in October
Prosecutors from Beijing's Dongcheng District announced the indictment in a one-line statement that did not mention when a trial would be held.

In June, Chinese President Xi Jinping declared that illegal drugs should be wiped out and that offenders should be severely punished.

The crackdown snared more than 7,800 people in Beijing alone, according to police, and celebrities were targeted because of their influence over the public.
Jaycee Chan has appeared in several films and has released three albums.
